National Basketball Association (NBA) legend Kobe Bryant passed away in a helicopter crash. He and nine others including his daughter Gianna Bryant were involved in the fatal wreck in Calabasas, California. Just a few of Kobe Bryant’s accomplishments include him being a 5-time NBA champion, 18-time all-star, and 1997 slam dunk champion. His daughter Gianna, played for her father’s AAU team and was a rising star in the league. Gianna’s dream was to play for the University of Connecticut Huskies. The Huskies and the entirety of the NBA held a moment of silence and a tribute to Gianna and Kobe Bryant.

Drexel King, a senior at Immanuel Lutheran Christian Academy (ILCA), is a basketball fanatic. He loves the game of basketball and played for the ILCA varsity team. King doesn’t remember Bryant for just playing basketball, but the legacy he left behind.

“He was more than a basketball player, he was an NBA champion, he was an Oscar winner, he was Kobe,” King said.

Kobe Bryant had his fair share of legal troubles. In 2003, Bryant was accused of sexual assault by a hotel employee. Time passed and court was issued but all charges were dropped. Although many mourn the passing of an iconic figure, we should not forget past affairs. Certain people might suggest leaving out that kind of information due to his family grieving. To King, that is a memory that we should not look over.

“When you look back at a figure in history it is important to look at everything; the good and the bad,” King said.

Christian Thomas, a sophomore at ILCA, looks at Bryant to mimic skills on the court.

“(Kobe) achieved great things on the court and was an amazing basketball player I looked up to,” Thomas said.

Life continues to move on for the fans of the NBA. The news of Gianna, Kobe, and the seven others is a tragedy to all people. Since the accident, Thomas has had a new outlook on life.

“Don’t take life for granted knowing that anything can happen at any time,” Thomas said.

Not everyone who is mourning the death of Gianna and Kobe is a die-hard NBA fan. Others look at this as a disaster and something that should never happen to a family. Brena Brown, a senior at ILCA, has an uneasy feeling when imagining what the Bryant family is going through.

“The fact that he and his daughter both died is sad altogether. Just thinking about his wife and what she is going through is terrible,” Brown said.

Like King, Brown agrees with moving forward but not forgetting the past.

“I don’t think you should just act like it never happened. It is apart of his history. He never let it affect him whether it was true or not,” Brown said.

The entire world mourns the death of the two basketball stars and seven others. Gianna and Kobe are gone, but will never be forgotten. The entirety of the NBA league held small tributes to the two players at the beginning of each game. Both teams would either accept an eight-second backcourt violation or a 24-second shot clock violation to remember both of Kobe Bryant’s jersey numbers. Both Gianna and Kobe will be dearly missed by the basketball world as their deaths took everyone’s breath away.

The seven others included in the helicopter accident were John Altobelli, his wife Keri Altobelli, and their daughter Alyssa Altobelli teammate of Gianna. More include Christina Mauser, Sarah Chester and her daughter Payton Chester, who was also a teammate of Gianna, and the pilot Ara Zobayan. The world will continue to remember the lives of the victims and move forward to spreading their legacy and the good they have done.

Coach’s World Record https://thecrunews.com/1468/news/coachs-world-record/ https://thecrunews.com/1468/news/coachs-world-record/#respond Mon, 17 Feb 2020 15:09:30 +0000 https://thecrunews.com/?p=1468 Shouts and heavy metal music filled the room as Emsy Clark marched up to the barbell with a determined look on his face. Time stood still as he lowered himself underneath over half a ton of iron. One push and it was over. Blood dripping from his nose, Coach Clark stood, purple in the face. He just secured his place as a world record holder in his weight class for a 1,005lb squat: an incredible feat of strength. His total score (combined weight of deadlift, squat, and bench press) in the powerlifting competition on Saturday, Feb 8 was 2,405. It is difficult to describe the intense work ethic required to achieve that level.

Coach Clark had to eat 8,000 calories a day for 12-16 weeks leading up to the competition.

The main focus of his diet was on protein.

“I’ve been lifting for 10 years,” he says in regards to his preparation for the lift.

Under Coach Clark’s apprenticeship, Kayla Brinkman also participated in the powerlifting competition but says she was dissatisfied with her performance.

According to Mrs. Brinkman, Coach Clark had squatted this weight before in practice.

However, he says that does not mean it is guaranteed in a competition.

“When you’re at your own gym, it’s a home-field advantage. Everything’s perfect. The spotters, the bar, and there’s no rush to put on knee wraps,” states Coach Clark.

Senior Adam Zarski lifts under Coach Clark’s supervision in the 8th-hour lifting class and was excited when he heard the news, “I can’t imagine even having a thousand pounds on my back.”

Coach Clark will be competing in a World competition in September and is unsure if he will try for more weight, “I already have the record so I don’t know how heavy I’ll go.”

The Winter Chill That Has Enveloped ILCA https://thecrunews.com/1446/news/the-winter-chill-that-has-enveloped-ilca/ https://thecrunews.com/1446/news/the-winter-chill-that-has-enveloped-ilca/#respond Wed, 12 Feb 2020 15:10:00 +0000 https://thecrunews.com/?p=1446 The coldest chill of winter has reached Immanuel Lutheran Christian Academy (ILCA).  The thaw of spring will come soon, but for some students and teachers, not soon enough.

Mr. Tom Koepsel who helps around the school and makes sure everything is running smoothly, was asked if he believed that the school has been able to keep everyone warm so far this winter.

Koepsel replied, “The school has been able to do so, but it is hard to tell for me since I am not in the school enough to correctly tell.”

Koepsel said he hopes, “the school is able to continue to keep all the students warm.”

Koepsel described some precautions that he is taking to make sure the school stay warm including but not limited to, “monthly inspections and calls to Trane.”

Up to this point, Koepsel believes that, “the heater/boiler has been able to handle the weather outside and that not much is different from last year.”

If there were any lessons to be learned from last year, Koepsel would only say, “we learn from our mistakes.”

Freshman Garrett Jones said that so far he has been able to, “stay warm and comfortable.”

Jones adds that up to this point, the school has been able to, “keep himself warm throughout the day but the sanctuary is cold during our chapel.”

Jones said he prefers spring over winter any day.

Jones feels that the school, “doesn’t need to do a lot to make him more comfortable throughout each day, but the sanctuary could be a little warmer during chapel services.”

Senior Caden Suess says that he has been able to tolerate the winter chill so far.

Suess added that his car has, “for the most part been able to tolerate the winter chill so far as well.”

When asked what he normally includes in his car to keep him warm if it were to break down,

Suess replied, “I keep an ice scraper and a car charger in my car every day.”

Suess said that the school has not been able to keep him warm throughout the day.

Suess added, “It’s not just one room, it is usually the whole building.”

High school teacher Mrs. Ginger Hendricks said that the school has been able to keep everyone warm so far and added that if there were any problems, they were quickly addressed and fixed.

Hendricks described some of the objects that she has in her classroom to make sure everyone in it stays warm.

“A heater, that’s about it.  If it gets really bad, the students are allowed to go to their lockers and get their jackets.”

In the end, Hendricks said up to this point her classroom has been warm enough for her and the students and there are no concerns at this time.

Overall, it appears that the heater has been able to handle the cold weather fairly okay so far this winter, let’s just hope it can make it to spring and handle the cold weather that is yet to come.

XFL Take Two https://thecrunews.com/1442/news/xfl-take-two/ https://thecrunews.com/1442/news/xfl-take-two/#respond Wed, 12 Feb 2020 15:09:41 +0000 https://thecrunews.com/?p=1442 It has been almost twenty years since the last XFL game was played, in 2001. The XFL was deemed a disaster after just one season and the commissioner folded the league. Thousands and thousands of optimistic fans are eager to see the XFL’s first game of 2020 on February 8th, when the Seattle Dragons face off against the D.C. Defenders.

How Will The XFL Be Different Than The NFL?

There are many exciting innovations that the XFL has made to the rules of traditional football. The main goal for the XFL is to be more exciting and faster-paced than the NFL.  There are a couple of ways that the XFL will be different than the NFL. One is the one foot inbounds rule. Another will be the dedicated ball-spotting official. Furthermore, the XFL will have shorter halftimes. Some major rule changes will be in place during the kickoffs. According to the XFL “college football kickoffs are only 6% of plays but lead to 21% of concussions.” So in order to eliminate the injuries, the XFL will be forcing the kicker to kick it in bounds between the 20-yard line and the endzone. The teams (other than the kicker and the returner) will start five yards away from each other at the 35 and 30-yard line, then when the ball is touched by the returner, the two teams can engage in typical football play.

Another new rule that the XFL will use to hopefully excite fans is the new extra-point rule. When a team scores they will be awarded the usual six points, then they will have the option to start the extra point play from the two-yard line, which will be worth one point, the five-yard line, which will be worth two points, or the ten-yard line which will be worth three points. The XFL does not want teams to punt the ball, so in order to limit punting the ball, the XFL has new rules regarding that if the ball goes out of bounds or is kicked into the endzone it will result as a major touchback and the ball will be placed at the 35-yard line.

How Many Teams Are There?

There are going to be eight this season but commissioner Oliver Luck plans to expand after the first season. Including the previously mentioned teams, the Seattle Dragons and the New York Guardians, the six other teams are the Saint Louis Battlehawks, the Houston Roughnecks, the Dallas Renegades, the Los Angeles Wildcats, the Tampa Bay Vipers, and the D.C. Defenders. Luck has mentioned that cities that have lost NFL teams due to them moving are targets for the XFL expansion teams, such as San Diego, California, and Oakland, California.

Will This XFL Last Longer Than The Last Time?

Even though the commissioner of 2020 XFL, Oliver Luck, will control the league, Vince McMahon, still owns the league. He has already invested $500,000,000 into the league, which is intended to last for the next three years.

“I really hope the XFL lasts a while because having more football to watch is a big bonus and it was really fun to watch,” alumni Garrett McDonald said.

Will There Be Any Players With Previous Playing Experience

Former Oklahoma Quarterback will be playing for his former OU coach Bob Stoops for the Dallas Renegades. The second-best ranked quarterback from Penn State, Matt McGloin, plays for the New York Guardians. Thee 2014, Ohio State college football champion, Cardelle Jones will play quarterback for the D.C. Defenders.

“I think that the XFL could gain a lot of popularity if they could get some older NFL players to either do the commentary, sideline reporting or maybe even playing in the games,” Brett Gilbert said.

How Long Will The Season Last?

The XFL will have a ten-week regular season, and then the two best teams from each conference from East and West will play each other in the semifinal games, and then the championship game on Sunday, Apr. 26 capping off the season.

Who Has The Best Odds To Win A Championship?

The Dallas Renegades is an early favorite to win the championship. The New York Guardians are projected to come in second place followed closely behind by the Los Angeles Wildcats and Tampa Bay Vipers.

“I am sticking for the Dallas Renegades because they have a lot of Sooners on them, like Bobby and Landry Jones and because they are the closest team to Broken Arrow,” Senior Brena Brown said.

Week One Scores

Defenders 31 – Dragons 19

Roughnecks 37  – Wildcats 17

Battlehawks 15 – Renegades 9

Guardians 23 – Vipers 3

New Tobacco Laws Combat Teen Vaping https://thecrunews.com/1452/news/new-tobacco-laws-combat-teen-vaping/ https://thecrunews.com/1452/news/new-tobacco-laws-combat-teen-vaping/#respond Tue, 04 Feb 2020 14:54:35 +0000 https://thecrunews.com/?p=1452 Before Dec. 20, 2019, high school seniors could go into any convenience store or smoke shop and purchase nicotine products for themselves and their peers. This has created a new generation of very young nicotine addicts, mostly thanks to e-cigarettes. To combat this epidemic, the US passed a new federal law that changed the tobacco minimum legal sales age (MLSA) to 21. They have also banned the sale of all flavors of cartridge-based e-cigarettes, other than tobacco and menthol.

This directly targets all young smokers. According to the American Lung Association, increasing the MSLA of tobacco products will efficiently “counter the tobacco industry’s efforts to target young people” by reducing smoking initiation for 15-17 year-olds by 25 percent and 15 percent for 18-20-year-olds.

At this point in the process, many teens are still able to get their hands on nicotine products. Sophomore Cade Carpenter believes, “this new law will keep vapes away from a lot of the upcoming freshman.”

An eighth-grader that wished to remain anonymous predicted, “I feel like it will make that type of stuff really hard to get to for kids my age, so it will work.”

Today’s high schoolers have been branded as the JUUL generation. It is believed that the next school year will begin a new era of low-smoking levels in teens.

Sophomore Emily Farrell agrees with Carpenter’s statement and said, “This new law will change the mainstream of vaping in high schools.”

As for the 19 and 20-year-olds that have moved on from high school, a new habit may need to be looked into. Research on teen vaping and the effects of the new MSLA will continue to transpire as time goes on.

The Dangers of Drinking https://thecrunews.com/1448/features/the-dangers-of-drinking/ https://thecrunews.com/1448/features/the-dangers-of-drinking/#respond Fri, 31 Jan 2020 15:35:59 +0000 https://thecrunews.com/?p=1448   Alcohol consumption in teenagers has increased severely; as of 2015, 7.7 million people between the ages of 12 and 20 have consumed alcohol “beyond a few sips.” Alcohol consumption has become a problem as teens are naive of the consequences that follow drinking. Senior Caden Suess who is getting closer to the legal drinking age says he is aware of the dangers that are associated with drinking. Suess says the main reason for addiction comes from wanting to fit in with the rest of their friends or because of a mental or physical pain they struggle with.

“Some people do not want to face the realities of life, it is easier to slip away into a bottle or a pill and take the easy way out,” Suess said.

Suess said his grandmother was taken to the hospital because of alcohol and an old friend of his dad was killed in a car accident because of alcohol. Suess greatly fears the dangers of drinking and sympathizes with those who are caught in addiction.

Nearly 1 in 4 adults under the age of 30 meet the diagnostic criteria for alcoholism. A study conducted by the Washington Post showed that alcoholism is more common in men, people who are below the poverty threshold, and people who live in the midwest. This is important to Oklahoma especially due to many low income areas and households as well its location. Sophomore Emily Farrell believes that it is an issue in other schools like Broken Arrow or Union.

Farrell went on to say how the choice to drink alcohol starts at a young age when teenagers either choose to drink to look cool, or to escape from the bad things in their life. Farrell also made known how aware she was of the consequences that follow drinking such as liver disease and alcohol poisoning. Although she displayed her awareness in the dangers, she said that drinking can be done in moderation as long as people are aware of how much they can drink before bad things can occur. “When you binge drink it can make you sick and you will no longer begin to function properly and end up passing out,” Farrell stated.

When drinking, complications can occur very quickly when not taking moderation into consideration. At a .02 alcohol level, very light impairments occur. At a .04 alcohol level the feeling of being relaxed and retaining a buzz occurs. At a .08 alcohol level, which is the legal limit for most states, noticeably impaired movement, judgment, and driving skills occurs. At a .12 alcohol level vomiting occurs and further drinking will start to have some serious effects.

Senior Camden Barker has witnessed such things happen with a close family member who was taken to the hospital after being dropped off at his doorstep passed out drunk. The thought of not knowing if his family member was going to be fine and drinking without moderation in general is a very scary thought for him.

Barker also had friends go to a party who posted pictures of them drunk. The photos had surfaced around enough and eventually gotten to their parents. The events ended with Barker’s friends being severely punished.

“It’s scary not knowing what happens behind closed doors when it comes to alcohol and drugs,” Barker stated.

Barker believes the best way to stop alcohol abuse is to admit that you have a problem and seek help. Instead of letting the addiction take over, step back and see what the addiction has done to you and how it has taken over.

Overall, addiction has taken over in this century and has had a massive impact on teens who are beginning to understand what alcohol is and how they think it could benefit their status or how it could pull them away from their day to day issues.

The End of a Star Wars Saga https://thecrunews.com/1428/features/the-end-of-a-star-wars-saga/ https://thecrunews.com/1428/features/the-end-of-a-star-wars-saga/#respond Thu, 23 Jan 2020 15:19:25 +0000 https://thecrunews.com/?p=1428 Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker has officially been released and has wrapped up the Skywalker saga in a controversial movie. The saga started back in 1977 with the release of Star Wars – A New Hope and it quickly became popular racking up 775.4 million dollars. Only three years later did Star Wars – The Empire Strikes Back come out to easily achieve 547.8 million dollars. This was just the beginning of the Star Wars series as Star Wars – Return of the Jedi would come in 1983 with a total amount of 475 million dollars. The trilogy became the hottest set of movies for the entirety of the 1980s and would continue until 1999 with the anticipated release of Star Wars – The Phantom Menace. This sparked off the prequels for Star Wars – Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith to follow. In 2016, a new trilogy would begin as it continues the Skywalker saga with new characters and new controversy.

Emily Clark, a junior at Immanuel Lutheran Christian Academy (ILCA), has been a Star Wars fan for many years.

“I’ve been a (Star Wars) fan a little before the Force Awakens came out. I haven’t seen Star Wars for most of my life and the first episode I watched was The Empire Strikes Back and I feel like it was a good first episode to watch,” Clark said.

The biggest Star Wars debate in the past few decades has always been prequels vs. originals. But to Clark, the winner is clear.

“I do prefer the original movies. Only because I feel it was really at its prime and kinda set up the entire story but however I do really like the prequels because my favorite character is Obi-Wan Kenobi,” Clark said.

Clark has her own opinion on the new trilogy as well.

“The newer ones are pretty good. I don’t like when they deviate from the original plotline. So I really the Force Awakens because it was almost a New Hope scene for scene,” Clark said.

Drexel King, a senior at ILCA, agrees with Clark on the original vs. new trilogy debate.

“The originals have also been the best I gotta go with that. I like all of them, I like the vibe I get from them, because it is like Sci-Fi and futuristic but also really old,” King said.

Out of all of the Star Wars movies King has one that really makes his skin crawl.

“I hate episode two; Attack of the Clones. It’s terrible, it looks bad, the story is awful, the acting is bad and it is just awful. Even Rogue One is bad,” King said.

With the release of the last Skywalker movie, fans are in a mixed review frenzy. Some fans might say that Rise of Skywalker did not live up to the hype set up before it. King is stuck in the middle.

“I wouldn’t say it is the end of Star Wars, but how they ended it was okay. It could have been worse and it could have been better. I wasn’t all that upset, I was fine with it,” King said.

Jackson Bush, a junior at ILCA, is in agreement with his other classmates on what the best trilogy is.

“As much as the movies were mistakes to be made and having to be edited now, they still make more sense than the movies we have now. There was a lot of passion coming from George Lucas that Disney lost when they bought it,” Bush said.

Despite the compelling argument from King, Bush says the worst Star Wars movie is one most fan can agree with.

The Phantom Menace is so bad. It is all over the place but the big battle at the end of the movie was good,” Bush said.

The Skywalker saga is finally complete with the Rise of Skywalker wrapping it up. Although the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television show is returning with the continuation of the Skywalkers, the official movie saga is complete. Fans are excited for the upcoming movies and what Disney has planned for the Star Wars future.

All About The New Teachers at ILCA https://thecrunews.com/1420/news/all-about-the-new-teachers-at-ilca/ https://thecrunews.com/1420/news/all-about-the-new-teachers-at-ilca/#respond Tue, 21 Jan 2020 15:14:47 +0000 https://thecrunews.com/?p=1420 There are two new teachers at Immanuel Lutheran Christian Academy (ILCA), who recently joined the school.  Their names are Dr. Chris Beswick and Mrs. Sharon Jones.

Beswick described how he found out about the teaching job because he knew the board president well and was excited at the opportunity.

Beswick said, “I have enjoyed the small class sizes, but also found it sort of a challenge.”

When asked why, he said because he was used to teaching large college classes.

Above all, Beswick said he has enjoyed all the students he has taught so far.

The other new teacher Mrs. Sharon Jones, said her first reaction upon hearing of a teaching job available here was, “shock, because she was retired at the time.”

Jones said she first heard of the available teaching position from her grandson Garrett who had just started school here a few weeks prior.

Jones said she is enjoying the students and the small-class sizes and claims the students are “like students everywhere.”

Above all, Jones said she is “enjoying it”, but can only teach here until the end of the year when the school hopes to hire a full-time teacher for next year.

Principal Mr. Stephen Zehnder said he emailed most of the students here to ask if they had any family members who would be available to teach.  “Mrs. Jones is the grandparent of Garrett in 9th Grade, and Dr. Beswick is friends with Miranda Smith who is the school board president.”

From meeting the new teachers, Zehnder said, “they are wonderful, very Godly, and they love to teach.”
Zehnder said he knows they’ll enjoy it and that they even told him, “they’re enjoying it.”

Zehnder added that these teachers had to be hired because “Mrs. Nelson retired.”

The student body’s opinion of the new teachers is mixed.  Most of the students have said they like them both but some prefer one over the other.  The majority said they feel like they will have to get used to having them around.

High school senior Liam Carr has Mrs. Jones and Dr. Beswick for classes.

Carr claims that his initial thoughts of Mrs. Jones are that, “she is very professional” and is “teaching me things I thought I knew, but didn’t.”

Since Carr is also in the classroom during a Dr. Beswick class, he feels that Dr. Beswick is, “very cool and has a lot to say.”

When asked if the new teachers compare to Mrs. Nelson in any way, Carr said, “yeah” and added, “they’re both good.”

In the end, the new teachers are really excited to have the opportunity to teach here.  Although this occurred in the most sudden and dramatic of circumstances, everyone will eventually get used to having them around and hopefully enjoy their teaching and learn from them.

The Iranian Crisis https://thecrunews.com/1419/news/the-iranian-crisis/ https://thecrunews.com/1419/news/the-iranian-crisis/#respond Wed, 15 Jan 2020 15:07:44 +0000 https://thecrunews.com/?p=1419 If you are up to date in world news, then the current Iranian crisis should not surprise you. The airstrikes and drone assassinations are not new to the scene. This U.S. vs. Iran conflict has been going on for the past forty years. It began to escalate in 2015 when the U.S. signed a nuclear deal with Iran, in which the U.S. gave Iran around 50 billion dollars. Many U.S. officials say, in return, they have been using that money to fight back against the U.S. The tension between Iran and the U.S. reached an all-time high on Friday, January 3 when the U.S. set up a drone strike that killed an Iranian general named Qassem Soleimani. He was known as one of the most powerful men in Iran, second only to the Supreme Leader. Soleimani had a militia of 20,000 people, known as the Quds Force, which was deemed a terrorist organization by the U.S. in 2007. Because of that, some say that he was the most powerful man in the Middle East. Contrary to popular belief, the U.S. did not target Soleimani because he led the attack on the U.S. embassy. The U.S. has been tracking him ever since late December, when he used his militia to fire rockets at a U.S. base in Iraq, killing a civilian U.S. defense contractor. On January 4th, 2020 a Ukrainian airplane holding civilians was shot down by Iran. So far there are reports from Canada and UK that Iran has shot down the plane but more recently the U.S. has reported that an anti-rocket defense system is responsible for it.

“I heard that Iran is blaming the U.S. for them shooting down the civilian plane,” Senior Adam Zarksi said, “It seems like a childish thing to do. Blame the other person for something they did. It makes me mad.”

Iran is saying that the plane experienced technical difficulties but recently a video surfaced of a missile hitting something in the air around the same time and place of where the airplane would have been. The U.S. has announced that all Americans in Iran should get out of their as fast as they can now. Trump has declared that his intentions are to not go to war with Iran, but if we have to we will.

People are smart, they don’t want to start another world war in some country in the middle east,” Junior Sajin Porter said.

Many students are starting to show there patriotic side.

“I don’t understand why Iran would want to test us and our army. It seems like a bad move by them,” freshman Zane Evans said.

Porter thinks that “the Iranians know what they are facing. Even if they tried to face (the U.S.) with all there force they’d lose,” he said.

As of January 14th Iran is now looking to set up a lawsuit against the U.S. and President Trump for killing Soleimani.

What Is It About Kanye? https://thecrunews.com/1374/uncategorized/what-is-it-about-kanye/ https://thecrunews.com/1374/uncategorized/what-is-it-about-kanye/#respond Sat, 21 Dec 2019 23:44:50 +0000 https://thecrunews.com/?p=1374 To say that Kanye West’s life is full of controversy is an understatement. If you don’t know who Kanye West is, he is a song producer, artist, fashion designer, filmmaker, and businessman. He also has a huge uncontrollable temper and a lot of money. In multiple awards shows West has stormed the stage in protest, often stealing the microphone and claiming who he thinks the winner should be.

In 2005, Kanye West supported an effort to help fund for the Hurricane Katrina victims. At the end of the nationally broadcasted event West commented, “(President) George Bush doesn’t care about black people.” West has had many remarks about President Obama and President Trump over the years that have received heavy criticism. In 2018 West had an interview where he commented that “slavery sounds more like a choice.”

At the start of 2019, Kanye West began hosting church services. Weeks later West announced he is a born again Christian. In his amateur days, West had songs where he would speak about God and his struggles with Him. West continued to talk about his faith and then in October of 2019 he released his long-awaited album “Jesus is King.” This was met with a lot of criticism. Critics argue that people do not need someone to tell them how to act or think, and the other sees “Jesus is King” as a great spiritually helping song. Jesus Is King is the only album to ever be on Billboard 200, Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, Top Rap Albums, Top Christian Albums, and Top Gospel Albums simultaneously.

“I honestly think its great seeing someone with as big of an influence as Kanye West to not only start accepting Christianity but speak up and share it with others,” Cade Carpenter said.

Although I think that it is good that Kanye says he is Christian and he is practicing Christian values I think he still has a long way to go. In 2013 Kanye related his album called “Yeezus.” The album’s name is a mix of his nickname Ye and the name of Jesus. Also on that same album, he had a song titled “I Am a God”. In a few of Kanye’s songs, in between rapping about women, drugs, and money, he fits in a few lyrics about him struggling with God and Christianity.

“Kanye’s album (Jesus is King) is not that bad, but I would not listen to it over other music,” Zach Gage said.

Recently Kanye held a Sunday Service with megachurch pastor Joel Osteen. During the service, Kanye said, “Now the greatest artist God has ever created is working for him.” Kanye is still carrying his ego with him. Reports have come out recently that Kanye West and Joel Osteen are going on tour together in 2020. Kanye fits in with the category of current loosely-grounded megachurch pastors. Their message is about doing what makes you feel good and everything is going to be okay. Kanye does not seem to sleep, as he has put on two operas, which have mixed reviews. Also, there are rumors that Kanye will release an album on Christmas.

“I just think he’s just okay. I mean, I’ve never really liked him or his music,” Caden Suess said.

Personally, I think that what Kanye has done is extraordinary. In today’s secular celebrity driven world, I think it is very brave, that Kanye has decided to embrace his faith, and leave his old life behind. God works through broken people and Kanye fits that description. So, although it is great to see Kanye a Christian, I do not think he has it all together yet.
